People often wonder how my paintings develop from start to finish, so this past weekend as I painted this little 4x6 acrylic dolphin painting, I decided to take pictures along the way to share my process! Feel free to leave any questions you have in the comments section. Enjoy! #1 I almost always begin a painting by planning it out in quick little pencil thumbnail sketches. That way I can better envision how I would like it to look before sketching it out in full size. #2 Next I sketch it out full size on the canvas or paper that the finished product will be on. Honestly I don't know why I sketch out so much as I end up painting over most of it! #3 With acrylic paint I start from the back and continually add layers as I move forward. With acrylics I have to work very quickly when blending as the paint drys very fast. #4 With the background painted, I sketch out the next layers with a white chalk pencil and begin to fill them in. #5 Here I further develop the dolphins with more shadows and highlights. #6 As I move forward into the foreground, I paint a quick base layer. #7 Again, moving from the back to the front, I add more detail to the foreground. I like to sketch things out in white chalk pencil as a guide so that I get the shapes and placement right. #8 I continue to slowly layer on more highlights and shadows. #9 Once I have the basic highlights and shadows in place, I start layering on more detail. #10 Here it is, the signed finished product! When I use white chalk pencil I make sure that I "erase" any left over lines with a wet paintbrush. I always have a difficult time calling a painting finished, as there is always SO much more I see that can be done, especially the longer I look at it. More detail, more tweaking, more highlights or shadows, etc. But there comes a point when you just need to call it finished! Hope you've enjoyed!
